Description
This circa 1875 quilt measures 92 inches by 82 inches, and is made of red and green cottons on a white background. It is hand pieced, hand appliquéd and hand quilted, with 5 rows of 4 red and green baskets set straight on a white background, and a green and red sawtooth border. Although the colors have faded, the quilt remains a beautiful example of fine workmanship.
This quilt was displayed at the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, VA in 2000. The Museum’s exhibit featured baskets of all kinds, and the Society also loaned a 1930s split oak hand woven basket that had been made on Flattop Mountain in Greene County before the formation of Shenandoah National Park.
The quilt was a gift from Mrs. Lacuta Powell Parrott, who died in 1997 at the age of 92. Mrs. Parrott’s relatives believe that the quilt was made by her mother, Mrs. Sarah Ann Long Powell.
