Title
Virginia Airline Condemnations, 1907
Subject
Transportation, Railroads Standards of Learning USII.9b VS.8c VS.10c
Description
In February 1907, the Virginia Airline first began acquiring land to build a new railroad that would run through Fluvanna County, and would connect to the C&O Railroad. This offered Fluvanna the opportunity to be connected to many larger cities such as Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Charlottesville, adding a boost to the economy by creating a cheaper option for moving freight and allowing supplies to reach local businesses much more easily and efficiently. Early construction of the Airline was slowed during the first six months of the land acquisition because of condemnations such as the one pictured, which states that the Airline was trespassing on people’s land. During those first months, at least 46 condemnations were reported, hurting public relations with the Airline, and causing delays to construction.
