Title
Byrd Mill, Louisa County
Subject
Mill.
Description
The Byrd Mill, a long familiar landmark in Louisa County, is no longer standing. It was burned in a fire in the 1970s, although portions of the mill pond remain.
Note the Roman numerals marking the parts of the rafter joinery, lapped and pegged as was typical of late 18th and early 19th C construction in the county. Large timber frame buildings be they mills or barns, once dotted the countryside. A few examples still remain in private hands.
Large nails found in the ruins of the mill are hand forged.
