Title
Headquarters- Captain Yancey vs. Daniel Boone
Subject
Revolutionary War
Description
Daniel Boone and Capt. Yancey
As a result of his service in the Virginia Militia, during the American Revolution and the earlier French and Indian War, Captain Charles Yancey, who bought Headquarters from Colonel Richard Anderson, was granted 1000 acres of land located in the Western sections of Virginia.
Yancey could not formally actualize his claims until after the signing of the Treaty of Paris which ended hostilities between Great Britain and the newly created United States. So, in 1785, to identify the specific parcel and to assist the establishment of his claim, Yancey entered into a partnership with Daniel Boone, one of the most experienced frontiersmen in North America. Their business arrangement did not go well.
Yancey would allege in a lawsuit that Boone did not record all of Yancey’s property and that he retained more of Yancey’s land than what the fee agreement covered. Boone lost the acrimonious lawsuit and, soured on society, he pushed further into the wilderness.
