Description
These images are photos of Jeff Porter and his home. Porter was born sometime in 1849. Throughout his lifetime in Louisa County, Porter lived at Trevillians Depot. We know little more about him than what these photos reveal, except that he was a widower by 1900.
Oxen were the prime animal power owned by farmers in Louisa County, and especially among African-Americans. An ox could be trained from an ordinary male calf whose horns were allowed to grow to help hold the wooden yolk in place. Oxen were much more affordable to purchase and maintain than a horse and simply needed a good yolk to pull plows or carts rather than the harness required for horses.
