369th Infantry Regiment Photos
Subject
World War I
Description
These images were found in a house about to be torn down across from the Zions Crossroads firestation on Poindexter Road and Route 250 in 2012. It is believed to be of the 369th Infantry Regiment, better known as the Harlem Hellfighters or the Black Rattlers. The Harlem Hellfighters are counted as the first regiment of African American men to join the American Expeditionary Force. The regiment was organized in New York and spent most of World War I working with the French Army. At the end of the war, they returned to New York City and paraded through the streets, demonstrating the ability of African Americans to serve their country. If anyone knows the identity of the men in these photographs, please contact the Louisa County Historical Society.
