Description
In early 1942, sugar was rationed; each rationing book contained 28 stamps, each stamp good for one week's ration of sugar. It is estimated that 3/4 pound of sugar was considered a week's ration. To prevent people from stocking up on sugar, the government established strict regulations and penalties. Each applicant had to state that they had no more than two pounds of sugar already for each family member in the household. If caught lying, citizens faced up to ten years in prison or a $10,000 fine! Sugar would remain rationed until June 1947.
